I got my second chance at life. I was given the rare opportunity to meet somebody that would dramatically turn my life around, and make it interesting again.

My name is Obye. I lived in West Linn, a small town that is twenty minutes south of Portland, Oregon. I lived in a decent home, but I lived with my friend Casey. Casey and I have been friends since elementary school. I worked out of my house, while Casey had a job in Portland he would commute to. Casey had a business trip next week, so the house would be mine. When he left for his business trip, I checked dA to see if any new TF stories that I managed to miss. I saw a really good TF story from ThunderClawShockTrix, and I had read his dragon story series based on Farm’s work, and others. I liked how they wrote, but I decided I would write a new original TF story that happened to me while my friend was away. I was depressed on how other artists on dA that wrote TF’s got so many more views on their work than mine. Of course coming into dA with no friends is tough, because you kind of have to put yourself out there, and make new friends.

I get a strange knock at the door. I went to go see who it was, and it was a stranger. I opened the door to see what he had to say.

“Are you Obye?” The stranger requested.

“Yes.” I said.

“May I come in?”

“Yeah, sure.” I let this stranger inside my house, and into the living room where I showed him a black leather couch to sit on. I asked him his name, and he said it was Ryan.

“So Ryan, what is this all about?”

“I am here to give you a second chance at life.” He said.

“Huh?”

“You are not satisfied with your life, correct?”

“Kind of.” I hesitated.

“Why only kind of?”

“Ok, the truth is yes. I didn’t go to college, I never made any real friends, and my girlfriends never lasted more than a week.”

“I think I can help.”

“You can? What kind of help?”

“Life-altering. Let me tell you though, it isn’t free.”

“Like money-wise?”

“No, not like that. You earn it through trial.”

“Ok, when can we get started?”

“Well, first have you gotten any strange dreams? Like you were in some place unfamiliar?”

“Does a bazaar count?”

“Do you know where it is?”

“No.”

“Ok. Have you been contacted by voice in your dream?”

“Yesterday night I was.”

“Ok. Last question. Can you feel your soul?”

“Can you elaborate?”

“Can you feel your aura in your dreams?”

“Yes, I could.”

“Then you are eligible for my services.”

“Ok, so now how does this work?”

“You need to get to sleep. I will make sure you stay asleep, but you need to go to sleep. I will explain when the time comes.”

“My room is over here.”

I led Ryan from the living room, through a short hallway, and hung a left into my room. I closed the blinds since it was still mid-day. I then got comfortable on top of my bed.

“Just fall asleep, and I will join you shortly.”

“Ok, you got it Ryan.”

I shut my eyes, as I tried to envision the bazaar again. Ryan waited thirty minutes for me to get into a deep sleep before joining me in my dream.
I started at the east edge of the bazaar walking past the shops that people had set up. I turned the corner to see one of the shop owners is Ryan. I went to his shop-front, as he said to his assistant:

“I have some business to attend to. Do you mind working the front?”

“No I don’t.” The assistant replied.

“Let’s get out of this bazaar, before I explain what’s going to happen.”

We made it to the north edge, as we walked toward a cemetery. I was starting to panic. I thought he was going to give me a second chance at life. Did he swindle me?

“What’s going on? Why are we going to a cemetery?”

“Everything will explain itself when we get there.”

Suddenly I felt a sudden urge to try and wake up. Then, he stopped right before we get to the main gate, and he points to a stone in the ground.

“That’s how we are going to change your life, but I need you to commit coming with me.”

“You had me scared there for a while, I thought we were going to the graveyard.”

“We’re not, although we are going to the spirit plane.”

“What?”

“This is the first step. You will not die when we get there because we are halfway already.”

“Well, if I want a second life, I’m ready.”

I step on the stone. It glowed purple as I felt like something was happening with my body.

“What happened?”

“We are in the spirit plane, but your soul is still with you, your body is still in West Linn.”

“Did I die?”

“No. We have to go to a different marker now to get us to the desired sub-plane in this realm.”

“Sub-Plane?”

“Well, there’s a ghost sub-plane, cat sub-plane, dog sub-plane, dragon sub-plane…”

“Did you say dragon sub-plane?”
“Yes. There is a dragon sub-plane. A Dragon is what you wanted to become, right?”

“Are you kidding me? I ALWAYS wanted to be a dragon.”

“Well, we need to get to the right marker here.”

“Ok.”

We came to another marker, and we were in the dragon sub-plane. What was different with this plane and the last was there was a good-sized circular barrier around me and Ryan.

“What is this thing around us?”

“It’s a protective barrier. Right now, there are dragon souls that come here to find another human vessel to house their souls for the right at a second chance at life. Your soul projects a certain aura. This barrier prevents your aura being detectable to the dragons, so they don’t even know you are here yet. When you leave this barrier, your aura will send out a signal to these dragons’ souls. The thing is that the overwhelming majority will reject your soul. There will come one dragon though that will be interested in you.”

“Let me guess, there is a catch.”

“Right, this dragon will not come easily. It will challenge you to see if you are worthy of housing its soul.”

“What happens if I lose?”

“Your soul will dissipate, and you will die.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Listen to me though, Obye. It is not too late to change your mind if you’re having second thoughts. You can still back out, and you can go back to your life as a writer if you’re not confident.”

“What happens if I walk past that barrier?”

“You will either tame a dragon’s soul, or perish. It is you personally saying you reject my offer of backing out.”

“I can’t come back in the barrier if I don’t want to fight a dragon?”

“Yes, because the dragons will know that you are here.”

“How much time do I have?”

“You may take as much time as you want inside the barrier.”

“Any time limit outside?”

“No. The longest part will be your battle with the dragon that has taken interest in you.”

“Ok. Just give me a moment.”

“Will do.”

I was scared that I might not have enough courage to face whatever dragon might face me. They all varied in style and appearance it seemed, with each one having a unique weakness about them. I didn’t know that at the time, but it would have tremendously helped. I thought long and hard about it. I then thought up a few more questions.

“I have a couple more questions.”

“Shoot.”

“Is it permanent?”

“Yes.”

“Will I still have my memories?”

“Yes.”

“Will I become more feral?”

“Depends on what dragon you fight. Every dragon has some degree of a feral mind, as they were dragons in their first life. The degree is how they lived their lives as a dragon.”

“How is there varying degrees of feral, if the measure is how they acted like themselves?”

“Well, not all dragons are what we conceive them to be, and also humans have befriended some of these dragons’ souls before they died.”

“OH, now that makes sense.”

“Do you have any more questions?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Have you made your decision yet?”

“Yes.”
“What will it be?”

“I will try to claim my dragon soul.”

“Well, all that I have left to say to you is good luck. Go at anytime you like.”

“Alright.”

I slowly walk toward the edge of the barrier then paused to look back at Ryan. He stood there patiently waiting to see the result of my battle.

I walked through the barrier, and then I saw hundreds of dragons flying, resting, and moving. I went up to a group of dragons on the right, and they all flew away or ran away. I went to the next few, and they kept sleeping, like I was non-existent. I went to the other side and they didn’t even acknowledge me. It wasn’t until I came to a white and black dragon that I felt different about it. It was sleeping, but it opened its right eye to look at me to see who had disturbed him. The dragon quickly stood up on two feet, and noticed that this dragon was huge. It was nine feet tall, was completely white on its front side except for its deep blue eyes, and a black crest on his chest that was an Egyptian hieroglyph. I realized that it was an ankh, and on the back of the dragon, he was completely black, except for his head. The dragon roared at me, and took upon a fighting stance.

I realized this was the dragon that was going to challenge me, and I thought why this dragon? Out of all the dragons to choose from, why did this one have to challenge me? It was preparing to shoot fire at me from its mouth, and released a fireball. I dodged the fireball, and left the spot burn to ashes. Here’s the weird thing though. When I went to go step on the ashes, the energy that I produced by stepping on the ashes made them reignite. I felt massive pain as purple flames that were consuming me soon dissipated, but not before burning me quite a bit. I quickly learned to avoid those ashes, because I couldn’t take anymore acts of spontaneous combustion. I then saw its hand charging up a ball in its right hand, and threw it at me. I avoided the blast then avoided the next one coming from its left hand. These were much easier attacks to avoid, but I needed to somehow close this gap it made. It began with another barrage of those dark balls, as I dove left and right, and adjusted my body to avoid being hit. I then thought: ‘What if I tried to defend against those ball attacks?’

It began again with a brutal barrage of its energy balls, but the first one it threw, I formed my hands out to defend against the attack. It looked like I was trying to catch the ball, and I thought of blocking the energy’s ball inside my hands. It then resulted in the dark ball being caught in my hands. Then I thought about adding magic to it, then converting it to summon a familiar.

A familiar is an animal spirit that fights on your side to defend you in times of battle. Only the thing about this thing was that it was a miniature dragon, and it could speak to me.

“Yowza, you got yourself a tough dragon.”

“You don’t say?”

"You're fighting a mage dragon, very powerful in magic."

"So how do you fit into the picture, my familiar?"

"I will help you, but you need to avoid his attacks, and strike with some melee."

"How?"

"Your physical power should be balanced against the dragon to compensate for not having a weapon."

"Really?"

"Yeah. You can't let him build an ash barrier."

"That's true."

I quickly advanced inward towards the dragon, dodging energy ball after energy ball. I leapt up and landed a punch right in the muzzle of the dragon. The dragon roared out of pain as I landed my first hit. I jumped down, avoiding the ash piles that the dragon left.

"That was a good first hit. Now you can still catch those balls and return serve, or you can keep using melee."

"I'll step up my range."

I backed up so that the dragon wouldn't use his fire attack. He kept doing his energy balls, which I caught and threw back at them. I landed counter attack after counter attack until a collar appeared in my hand.

“This is it, your big moment. Slap that collar around that dragon, and he’s yours.”

“Ok, what should I do?”

“Catch an energy ball then covert it to stun him when it is fired back.”

“Ok.”

I waited until he used the energy attack again. I couldn’t believe how many times he could do this attack along with having magic enhancers with his fire. That dragon either has one deep mana pool, has secret attacks, or a combination of both. I caught one of the energy balls and converted it into an electric ball to stun the creature. It hit, and was paralyzed for seven seconds.
I ran and slapped that collar around the dragon’s soul.

Then something was happening to the collar, it started electrocuting the dragon. It was using all its remaining strength and mana to try and get the collar off. It had gotten one off before, but I’m afraid that is not the case this time, though I looked at my familiar, and he looked like he was being riddled with the same pain as the dragon, but not as intensely.

“Since I was formed from your magic and the dragon’s, I’m losing health jointly with the dragon. You’ll be able to summon me again, I promise. Right now, I need to return to the dragon.”

“I’ll see you later then.”

The familiar soon after dissipated into thin air. The collar then stopped shocking the dragon. I approached the dragon slowly. It didn’t move or react to me getting closer. It looked down at me, knowing that I had beaten it in combat. I then turned around, and headed back towards Ryan, who was waiting in the protective barrier. The other dragons moaned to my captured dragon. They didn’t want it to leave, but they knew that it had to go.

I stepped into the barrier once again, and Ryan said,

“Nice capture there.”

“Thanks, now how is he going to merge with my soul?”

“Simple. You either take your soul and fill his, or you shrink his soul down to fit you.”

“Is there a preference as to which way is better?”

“It’s more natural to expand your soul in his body than shrinking it down.”

“Ok.”

I went inside of my dragon’s soul, and expanded inside of it, before sizing back down again to my normal size.

“It’s weird that you did it both ways, but alright. If it helps to know both, then be my guest.”

We went back to the top spirit plane, before heading back to the regular plane outside the graveyard.

“Ok, now what do we do?” I asked Ryan.

“We are going to the bridge.”

We went past the graveyard to the bridge, where it crossed the river in my dream.

“We’re going to wake me up Inception style?”

“Yep. Get on top of that platform.”

“Alright.”

I got on top of the platform, and moved to the end of it. “I guess I’ll see you back in the real world then.”

Ryan pushed me off the platform, as I slowly made my way down to the water. I pencil dove into it, before waking up scared to death of what happened.
A stranger comes to my door with a life changing proposal, will I be able to trust him?
